One of the Spanish Home Zone’s best-kept secrets can be discovered in El Mojon, which straddles the Valencian and Murcian borderline. Right on the beach with uninterrupted views towards La Manga is the Bar Mediterraneo renowned locally for its seafood and paella dishes. Its sheltered location makes it one of the few places you can genuinely eat ‘fuera’ all year round on a sunny day!
From its early days as a fishing village to its current cluster of bars and restaurants, the one thing that hasn’t changed about El Mojon is the pace of life…which rarely gets faster than slow. For the more adventurous, there are the bustling market towns of Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro del Pinatar, the amazing Roman saltworks and mudbaths, plus fabulous walks in the company of pink flamingos in the nearby nature reserve adjacent to the Mar Menor. And with around 320 days of sunshine each year and a mild winter, there is no shortage of sports and recreational activities, with golf, fishing, tennis and sailing among the most popular. But if that is too hectic, you can always take in the cultural heritage, shopping and local cuisine of Murcia and Cartagena – both of which are well worth a visit.
Less than 15 minutes drive from San Javier airport and within easy reach of Torrevieja, Alicante, Murcia and Cartagena, El Mojon offers something a little different (and a little special) from your traditional Spanish seaside resort. |
